Dear Parents

This is a short newsletter to let you know how you can support your child in and out of school this term.

Topic
Our Science topic will be Electricity.

History will be about Victorian Childhood.

Reading
Please hear your child read at home as often as possible. It has a noticeable effect on their progress if they don’t. Each child should bring their reading book home daily. Book reviews will be given (not with every book) and should be completed before a new book is asked for. Please sign the reading record book when your child has read, especially to indicate when the book is finished and also to make relevant comments. Please encourage your child to read a wide range of both fiction and non-fiction, not just the books from school. A ‘wider reading’ sheet is at the front of the reading record book on which you can write down other books read. Also ask your child relevant questions about the text, the characters and their actions or feelings, to re-tell the story and the meanings of words.
Books can be changed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Please keep the word wall in the reading book and practise this regularly.

P.E.
We are having P.E. on Mondays and Thursdays. All children require T-shirt, shorts and plimsolls.

In the interest of a child’s safety, jewellery, including earrings, must not be worn during P.E./Games lessons. They should be removed on these days or surgical tape provided to cover them, which the child must put on themselves. Long hair should be tied back.
All school clothing including uniform, should be named.

Homework

Your child will be given a list of spellings usually on a Friday to bring
and keep at home so that they can be revised. These will be tested the following Friday. Your child should use all the columns on the spelling sheet, working on one spelling at a time across the sheet. If you are still not sure how to use the sheet correctly, please come in and I will gladly explain it to you.
When necessary, number and literacy work will be given to consolidate that done in the classroom. Please make sure that your child completes this work and
returns it to school.
Please check your child’s reading pack/school bag regularly for school letters, homework etc.

S.A.T.S

There is now a greater emphasis on teacher assessment of a child’s work.
There is more flexibility over which tasks and tests are administered and these are used to support teacher assessment.
Most tests will be completed in May so holidays should be avoided in this month.

Thank you in anticipation of your support. Please don’t hesitate to contact either myself or Mr Bullock regarding any concerns you may have during the school term.
