Year 4

Dear Parents/ Carers,

This is a short newsletter to let you know what we will be studying in year 4 this term, and how you can support your child out of school.

Science

Our Science topic is about life processes, animals and humans as organisms. This involves learning about teeth (including oral care), and about the roles of muscles, joints and bones in how we move. We will be doing an experiment involving teeth during the second half of this term so if you could donate any of your children’s milk teeth that would be great!

Literacy
During Literacy this term, we will be reading stories with an historical setting, examining newspaper and magazine articles, investigating explanation texts and reading stories from other cultures. We shall also be learning to classifying words, use paragraphs and commas to organise our ideas and how to make use of powerful and interesting verbs to enhance our writing.
The children will be given spellings to learn each Friday for a test on Monday morning and will of course benefit from your support in this. It is important that your child continues to read to you at home this year. If you wish to comment on your child’s progress in reading please do so in their pink ‘reading record’ notebook.

Numeracy

Our maths topics this term include:

· Place value and partitioning numbers to 10,000

· Multiplication and division with remainders

· Naming and recognising 2D shapes

· Investigating tables, charts and graphs

· Time- including 24 hour clock

· Recognising simple fractions

We are also covering a lot of mental arithmetic in Maths lessons. Practising mental calculations at home at a practical level is very beneficial. I would also value your support in helping the children learn and practise times tables at home.

Geography
This term’s geography project will focus on settlements. We will be studying the features of farms, hamlets, villages, towns and cities. In the second half of term we will be specifically looking at where we live and the features of our own settlements.

P.E.
We will have P.E on Fridays and Premier Sport on Thursdays. Your child will need white or blue shorts, a white T-shirt and trainers/plimsolls. Tracksuits (or similar) will be useful for outdoor lessons as the weather turns colder. All garments should be clearly named. It would be most useful if your child could bring a P.E kit on Monday and leave it in school for the week as occasionally we have additional P.E lessons if the weather is fine.

In the interest of a child’s safety, jewellery, including earrings, must not be worn during P.E./Games lessons.
Long hair should be tied back.
No jewellery apart from earrings and watches should be worn to school.

Art/ D & T
In Art we will be drawing portraits and experimenting with shadow, time permitting we will also be using clay. In D & T we will be designing Christmas cards using mathematical shapes and sewing Christmas stockings using felt (this activity often requires a lot of support so I’m always grateful of an extra pair of hands….!). These lessons can involve using messy materials so you may want to send your child with a named apron or old shirt to protect their clothes.

French
This term in French we will be learning greetings, saying please/ thank you, numbers to 20 and classroom objects. We will begin to look at the notion of gender (le/la/les, mon/ma/mes) and the differences between the French and English sounds and spelling systems.

I.C.T
Working with computers this term we will be learning how to manipulate and edit text, save documents and to produce pictograms and branching databases using specific software. The children will also be using the computers to support work in other areas of the curriculum.

Please don’t hesitate to contact myself or Mr Bullock regarding any concerns you may have during the school term. I am available for informal chats before and after school, when I can usually be found in the classroom.

Miss Natalie Harvey
